1) 在西里西亚的一个主要城巿,也是保罗的出生地及早年的家乡。
使徒行传 9:11; 21:39; 22:3. 甚至在希腊历史的兴盛时期曾
是个重要城巿。在罗马内战时,它是属该撒这一边的,而且在
该撒来访的时候,改了城巿的名为茱利奥波利斯。亚古士督让
这城成为自由城巿。在早期罗马皇帝统辖之下,是个着名的教
育城。斯特拉波将它视为与雅典及亚历山大港一样的。大数也
是繁荣的商业地。位于西德努斯河岸之宽阔与肥沃的平原上。
如今没什么重要的遗迹存留。 |

Tarsus = "a flat basket"
1) a major city in Cilicia and the birthplace and early home of Paul.
Acts 9:11; 21:39; 22:3. Even in the flourishing period of Greek
history it was an important city. In the Roman civil wars, it
sided with Caesar and on the occasion of a visit from him its name
changed to Juliopolis. Augustus made it a free city. Its was
renowned as a place of education under the early Roman emperors.
Strabo compares it in this respect to Athens and Alexandria.
Tarsus also was a place of much commerce. It was situated in a
wild and fertile plain on the banks of the Cydnus. No ruins of any
importance remain. |
